The 5 Questions You MUST Ask Your Wedding Officiant Before You Book

Congratulations! You’ve found your soulmate, the perfect dress or suit or dresses and suits, and a venue that takes your breath away. Now comes a decision that’s just as crucial, but often overlooked: finding the person who will guide you through the most important part of your day—your wedding ceremony. Your officiant is so much more than a legal representative; they are the storyteller who will set the tone for your entire celebration.

At The Marry Men Wedding Officiants, we believe that choosing the right officiant is key to having a truly unforgettable ceremony. Based on our years of experience crafting personalized ceremonies for countless couples in the GTA, we’ve put together a list of the five most important questions you must ask any potential officiant before you book.
    1. What is your process for creating a ceremony script?

This is the most critical question you can ask. A generic, boilerplate ceremony won’t reflect your unique love story. A great officiant will have a personalized process. At The Marry Men, we start with a free, no-obligation consultation to simply get to know you. We want to hear the story of how you met, your favourite memories, and what makes your relationship special. We use this information to create a custom-written script that is one hundred percent unique to you. Your ceremony should feel like a conversation between two people who know and love you, not a recitation of a standard script.

    2. Are you licensed and experienced?

While a wedding can be a fun celebration, it’s also a legal commitment. You must make sure your officiant is legally licensed to perform marriages in your province. In Ontario, this means they are recognized by the government and can sign your marriage license. We are ordained with the Canadian International Metaphysical Ministry and are licensed by the Province of Ontario.

Beyond the license, experience is everything. An experienced officiant knows how to handle unexpected moments—like a guest’s cell phone ringing or a nervous groom forgetting his lines—with grace and professionalism. Our backgrounds in live theatre, public speaking, and event coordination mean we are always prepared, ensuring your ceremony runs smoothly from beginning to end.

  • Leave the “Diva” at the Door: Embracing Grace and Gratitude on Your Wedding Day

Leave the “Diva” at the Door: Embracing Grace and Gratitude on Your Wedding Day

Your wedding day should be a celebration of love, joy, and unity. However, even the most meticulously planned events can be derailed by unnecessary drama or a demanding attitude. It’s time to leave the “diva” at the door and embrace grace, gratitude, and a spirit of collaboration.

    Why Ditch the “Diva” Mentality?
    • It Stresses Everyone Out: A demanding or entitled attitude creates tension and anxiety for your wedding party, vendors, and guests.
    • It Tarnishes Your Memories: Focusing on minor imperfections or perceived slights will overshadow the beautiful moments of your day.
    • It Undermines Gratitude: Your wedding is a gift, a culmination of love and support. A “diva” attitude can obscure the appreciation you should feel.
    • It Damages Relationships: Demanding behaviour can strain relationships with loved ones and vendors, leaving a lasting negative impression.
    • It’s Not a Good Look: Simply put, being kind and gracious makes you, and your wedding, much more enjoyable.

2025/2026 Wedding Trends Edition: Greener Vows -Embracing Sustainability and Eco-Conscious Choices in Your Ontario Wedding (2025-2026 Trends)

By The Marry Men Wedding Officiants

As we look towards 2025 and 2026, couples are increasingly aware that their wedding day is not just a celebration of love, but also an opportunity to reflect their values. A significant and growing trend is the commitment to Sustainability & Eco-Conscious Choices. This movement is about making greener decisions at every turn, minimizing environmental impact, and leaving a positive legacy, not just a carbon footprint.

At The Marry Men Wedding Officiants, we believe that choosing a sustainable path for your wedding doesn’t mean compromising on beauty or luxury. In fact, it often leads to more thoughtful, authentic, and uniquely beautiful celebrations. It’s about ensuring your special day honours not only your love for each other but also your love for the planet we all share.

What Does an Eco-Conscious Wedding Look Like?

Gone are the days when “eco-friendly” meant sacrificing elegance. Today’s sustainable weddings are sophisticated, stylish, and deeply intentional. Here’s what this trend encompasses:

    • Local & In-Season Blooms: Moving away from imported, chemically treated flowers, couples are opting for florals sourced from local Ontario flower farms. This reduces transportation emissions and supports local agriculture. Florists are increasingly skilled in foam-free installations, using natural mechanics (like chicken wire, compostable netting, or water-filled vessels) instead of traditional floral foam (which is a microplastic).
    • Digital Invitations & Communication: While paper invitations can still have a place, many couples are significantly reducing paper waste by using elegant digital invitations, online RSVPs, and wedding websites for information dissemination. If paper is used, opting for recycled or seed paper is a popular choice.
    • Repurposed & Reused Decor: Instead of buying single-use decor, couples are renting items, sourcing from vintage shops, or repurposing elements from other events. Think classic furniture rentals, stunning backdrops that can be reused, or even DIY decor made from sustainable materials.
    • Ethically Sourced Attire: Beyond simply the look, couples are asking questions about where their dresses and suits come from, opting for designers who use sustainable fabrics, ethical labour practices, or choosing to buy pre-owned or vintage pieces.
    • Plant-Based & Locally Sourced Catering: The menu becomes a powerful statement. Caterers are being asked to prioritize ingredients from Ontario farms, showcasing seasonal bounty. An increase in delicious plant-based or vegetarian options, reflecting a growing awareness of the environmental impact of meat production, is also common.
    • Minimizing Waste: This is a comprehensive effort, including:
      • Composting & Recycling: Working with venues and caterers to ensure all organic waste is composted and recyclables are properly sorted.
      • Donating Leftovers: Partnering with organizations that collect surplus edible food to distribute to those in need.
      • Eco-Friendly Favours: Gifting guests items like seed packets for planting, reusable coffee cups, small potted plants, or making a charitable donation in their name.
      • Avoiding Single-Use Plastics: Using real dinnerware, glasses, and cutlery, and avoiding plastic straws and water bottles.
Why Green Vows are Gaining Ground

The drive towards sustainable weddings is fueled by several factors:

    1. Increased Environmental Awareness: Couples, often from generations deeply concerned about climate change, want their celebrations to align with their values.
    2. Supporting Local Communities: Choosing local vendors, farmers, and artisans directly benefits Ontario’s economy and reduces transportation footprints.
    3. Unique & Authentic Aesthetics: Sustainable choices often lead to unique, earthy, and naturally beautiful aesthetics that stand out from mass-produced elements.
    4. Cost Savings (Sometimes): While luxury sustainable choices exist, going local, repurposing, and minimizing waste can often lead to significant cost savings in certain areas, allowing couples to reallocate budget to other priorities.
    5. Setting an Example: Couples are inspired to set a positive example for their guests and future generations, demonstrating that beautiful celebrations don’t have to come at the Earth’s expense.
  • Your Story, Your Day: Embracing Hyper-Personalization and Storytelling for your Wedding Day in Ontario

Your Story, Your Day: Embracing Hyper-Personalization and Storytelling for your Wedding Day in Ontario

By The Marry Men Wedding Officiants

The landscape of weddings is continually evolving, reflecting shifts in culture, values, and how couples envision their most important day. As we look towards 2025 and 2026, one trend stands head and shoulders above the rest, transforming cookie-cutter events into deeply meaningful celebrations:

At The Marry Men Wedding Officiants, we are witnessing a beautiful renaissance where couples are moving far beyond traditional templates. They are actively infusing every single detail – from the grand gestures to the tiniest touches – with their unique love story, shared values, and vibrant personalities. This isn’t just about picking colours; it’s about weaving a narrative that captivates every guest and truly celebrates who you are as a couple.

    What Exactly is Hyper-Personalization?

Forget the generic “standard wedding package.” Hyper-personalization is the art of crafting a wedding experience that is unmistakably yours. It’s about creating moments and details that elicit smiles of recognition from your closest friends, perhaps even a shared laugh about an inside joke, or a quiet moment of reflection on your journey together. It’s the difference between a beautiful wedding and your beautiful, unforgettable wedding.

In a diverse province like Ontario, where love stories often cross cultures, traditions, and backgrounds, this trend is particularly resonant. Couples are no longer bound by rigid expectations but are empowered to pick, choose, and blend elements that honour their individual paths while forging a new, shared one.

Why the Shift? More Than Just a Trend, It’s a Movement

So, why are couples embracing this personal revolution?

    1. Authenticity Reigns: In an increasingly digital world, there’s a strong desire for genuine, authentic experiences. Couples want their wedding day to feel true to them, not a performance or a reproduction of someone else’s Pinterest board.
    2. Meaning Over Materialism: While aesthetics are still important, there’s a growing emphasis on the meaning behind the details. A custom cocktail has more resonance if it’s named after your first date spot than if it’s just a pretty drink.
    3. Guest Connection: Personal touches make guests feel more connected to the couple and their journey. They’re not just attending an event; they’re immersed in your story.
    4. Celebrating Individuality: Modern relationships celebrate the unique individuals who form the couple. The wedding day becomes a powerful reflection of that individuality coming together in union.
    5. Social Media Inspiration (and Differentiation): While social media offers endless inspiration, it also fuels the desire to create something unique and memorable that stands out from the crowd.
Weaving Your Story: Practical Examples of Hyper-Personalization

The beauty of this trend is that it can manifest in countless ways, big and small.

    1. The Ceremony: The Heart of Your Story

    • Personalized Vows: Moving away from standard templates, couples are writing or co-creating vows that are raw, honest, and filled with their specific promises and memories. Our officiants at The Marry Men are experts in guiding you through this process, ensuring your vows are heartfelt and truly reflect your bond.
    • Unique Rituals: Incorporating cultural traditions from both backgrounds (a tea ceremony, a jumping the broom ritual, a handfasting) or creating entirely new ones (a unity puzzle, a time capsule ceremony, a ring warming with guests).
    • Storytelling Officiants: Choosing an officiant who takes the time to truly get to know you and crafts a ceremony script that recounts your love story, your quirks, and your journey, making guests laugh and perhaps shed a tear. This is where The Marry Men truly shine.

    2. Food & Drink: A Taste of Your Journey

    • Custom Cocktails: Naming signature drinks after inside jokes, pets, or significant places (e.g., “The Toronto Island Ice Tea” if that’s where you had your first picnic).
    • Menu That Matters: Incorporating dishes from your heritage, a favourite restaurant’s special, or even a nostalgic dish from your childhood. Think of a late-night poutine bar if you met in Quebec, or a gourmet butter chicken station if you both love Indian cuisine.
    • Dessert Stations: A dessert bar featuring your favorite cookies, pies, or international sweets instead of (or in addition to) a traditional wedding cake.

    3. Decor & Aesthetics: A Visual Narrative

    • Themed Tables: Each table could be named after a significant place you’ve traveled, a movie you love, or a shared hobby, with accompanying small decor items.
    • Photo Displays: Curating a “journey of love” photo display showcasing moments from your first date to your engagement, perhaps with hand-written captions telling the story behind each picture.
    • Personalized Signage: Custom welcome signs, bar menus, or seating charts featuring your unique graphics, shared quotes, or even a timeline of your relationship.
    • Colour Palettes with Meaning: Choosing colours that reflect your personalities or have special significance, rather than just what’s “in season.”

    4. Entertainment: Soundtracking Your Love

    • Tailored Playlists: Working closely with your DJ or band to create a playlist that reflects your musical tastes, from your “first dance song” to late-night bangers that remind everyone of your favourite concert. Including songs that are meaningful to your relationship or cultural background.
    • Interactive Elements: Instead of just music, consider a caricature artist capturing guests’ likenesses, a personalized trivia game about the couple, or a silent disco with channels reflecting different eras of your love.

    5. Favours & Details: Little Touches, Big Impact

    • Meaningful Favours: Instead of generic trinkets, give out personalized items that reflect a shared passion (e.g., custom blend coffee beans if you’re coffee lovers, a small plant if you’re gardeners, or a donation to your favourite charity).
    • Guest Books Reimagined: A giant globe for guests to sign their favorite travel destinations, a piece of art to sign, or video booth confessions instead of a traditional guest book.
  • Painting Your Love Story: Embracing Vibrant & Expressive Colour Palettes in Your Ontario Wedding

Painting Your Love Story: Embracing Vibrant & Expressive Colour Palettes in Your Ontario Wedding

By The Marry Men Wedding Officiants

For years, wedding aesthetics often leaned into a soft, ethereal palette of whites, creams, blush, and muted greens. While undeniably beautiful, the world of weddings is currently experiencing a joyful explosion of colour! As we stride into 2025 and 2026, couples are boldly declaring their personalities through Vibrant & Expressive Colour Palettes, moving decisively away from understated tones to embrace lively hues that truly pop.

At The Marry Men Wedding Officiants, we believe your wedding day should be a vivid reflection of your love – full of life, energy, and joy. This exciting trend allows couples to do just that, creating visually stunning and emotionally rich celebrations that are as unique and unforgettable as their journey together.

The “Why” Behind the Burst of Colour

This shift isn’t arbitrary; it’s a vibrant response to several contemporary desires:

    1. Post-Pandemic Joy & Optimism: After periods of uncertainty, there’s a collective desire for celebration, exuberance, and optimism. Bold colours symbolize joy, vitality, and a fresh start.
    2. Authentic Personal Expression: Couples are less concerned with conforming to traditional norms and more focused on expressing their individuality. Colour is a powerful tool for self-expression.
    3. Making a Statement: In a world saturated with digital imagery, a vibrant colour palette creates a truly distinctive and memorable aesthetic that stands out both in person and in photos.
    4. Emotional Impact: Colours evoke emotions. Choosing a palette that radiates happiness, passion, or serenity can enhance the overall feeling of the wedding day for everyone present.
    5. Breaking Free from Convention: A desire to break free from perceived “rules” and embrace a more playful, artistic
    6. approach to wedding design.
Where Colour Comes to Life: Weaving Your Palette Throughout Your Day

The beauty of a vibrant palette is its versatility. It can be subtly woven into intimate details or form the dramatic backdrop for your entire celebration.

    1. Florals: The Living Canvas

    • Bold Arrangements: Move beyond single-colour bouquets. Think dramatic mixes of fuchsia peonies, electric blue delphiniums, fiery orange ranunculus, and deep emerald greenery.
    • Unique Flower Choices: Incorporate less common but visually striking blooms like protea, anemones with dark centers, or exotic orchids in vibrant shades.
    • Foam-Free Installations: Many Ontario florists specializing in bold designs are also champions of sustainability, creating stunning, vibrant arrangements without harmful floral foam, showcasing the flowers’ natural beauty and reducing environmental impact.
    • Unexpected Accents: Don’t limit colour to flowers; consider painted or dyed dried elements, colourful ribbons, or vibrant non-floral additions like berries or citrus slices.

    2. Linens & Tableware: A Feast for the Eyes

    • Textured Fabrics: Rich velvet tablecloths in jewel tones (emerald, sapphire, ruby) or textured linens in mustard yellow or terracotta add depth and luxury.

    • Unexpected Combinations: Mix and match different coloured napkins, chargers, or even chair sashes to create dynamic layers of colour.
    • Coloured Glassware: Forget clear! Embrace amber, cobalt blue, rose, or forest green goblets and tumblers that catch the light and add an instant pop.
    • Vibrant Place Settings: Incorporate patterned plates, colourful menus, or unique napkin rings that tie into your theme.

    3. Invitations & Stationery: Setting the Tone

    • Graphic Design: Use bold colour blocking, vibrant illustrations, or abstract patterns that reflect your chosen palette.
    • Bold Typography: Don’t shy away from colourful ink on a contrasting background, or even ombre effects.
    • Unexpected Materials: Invitations printed on colourful cardstock, acrylic, or even fabric.
    • Wax Seals: Incorporate colourful wax seals that subtly introduce your palette.

    4. Attire: A Confident Statement

    • Bridesmaids in Varied Bold Colours: Instead of one shade, dress your bridal party in different but complementary vibrant hues, creating a stunning visual gradient. Think terracotta, rust, and mustard together, or fuchsia, emerald, and cobalt.
    • Groom’s Accessories: A rich emerald velvet jacket, a fuchsia bow tie, or a boutonnière with a truly unique, colourful bloom.
    • Subtle Bride’s Pop: A colourful pair of shoes, statement earrings, a vibrant veil, or even a subtle embroidery in a bold shade on the wedding gown itself.

    5. Lighting & Ambiance: Setting the Mood

    • Coloured Uplighting: Transform your reception space with strategic uplighting in your chosen palette, washing walls or architectural features in atmospheric hues.
    • Projections: Project abstract patterns or images in your colours onto surfaces to create an immersive experience.
    • LED Furniture: Rent illuminated bars or seating that cycle through your colours or remain on a striking hue.

    6. Food & Drink: Edible Art

      • Colourful Cocktails: Design signature cocktails that not only taste amazing but are visually stunning with vibrant colours from natural fruit purées, butterfly pea flower tea, or colourful garnishes.
      • Vibrant Desserts: Move beyond white cake to multi-tiered creations with colourful ombre effects, bold icing colours, or adorned with fresh, vibrantly coloured fruits. Consider a dessert bar with colourful macarons, tarts, and candies.
  • Intimacy Redefined 2025/2026 Wedding Trend Edition: Why Micro Weddings and Elevated Elopements are the Future of Ontario Celebrations

Intimacy Redefined 2025/2026 Wedding Trend Edition: Why Micro Weddings and Elevated Elopements are the Future of Ontario Celebrations

By The Marry Men Wedding Officiants

The grand ballroom, the sprawling guest list, the perfectly choreographed evening for hundreds – for a long time, this was the quintessential wedding dream for many. However, as we navigate the evolving landscape of love and celebration in 2025 and 2026, a profound and beautiful shift is taking hold. Couples in Ontario and beyond are increasingly turning towards Intimate & Micro Weddings and Elevated Elopements. This isn’t a compromise; it’s a deliberate choice, prioritizing profound connections and exquisite experiences over sheer numbers.

At The Marry Men Wedding Officiants, we are deeply inspired by this trend. It’s a movement born from a desire for authenticity, allowing couples to craft celebrations that truly reflect their unique bond without the overwhelming pressure of a large-scale event. It’s a philosophy where quality triumphs over quantity, focusing on meaningful interactions with your closest family and friends, leading to truly unforgettable memories.

    What Does “Intimate” Truly Mean?
    • Micro Wedding: Typically defined as a wedding with 20-50 guests. It includes many traditional elements (ceremony, reception, cake, first dance) but on a much smaller, more focused scale.
    • Elevated Elopement: This isn’t a spur-of-the-moment courthouse dash. Today’s elopements are thoughtfully planned, often involving a handful of close loved ones (or just the couple and their officiant/witnesses) in a unique, stunning location, followed by an exceptional, intimate dining experience or adventure. It’s about making a grand, personal statement without the guest list.

The common thread? A conscious decision to prune the guest list, thereby unlocking the potential for an exponentially richer per-guest experience.

The Driving Force: Why Couples Are Embracing Intimacy

The recent past has undoubtedly played a role in accelerating this trend, prompting many to re-evaluate priorities. But the appeal of intimate weddings goes far beyond mere necessity:

    1. Meaningful Connections: With fewer guests, couples can genuinely connect with everyone present. Conversations are deeper, laughter is more personal, and every guest feels truly seen and appreciated.
    2. Elevated Experiences: A smaller guest count frees up a significant portion of the budget. This allows for higher per-guest spending on premium elements:
      • Gourmet Food & Drink: Think multi-course tasting menus, bespoke wine pairings, personal chefs, or a custom cocktail bar featuring rare spirits.
      • Luxurious Details: High-end floral arrangements, custom stationery, designer linens, or personalized gifts for each guest.
      • Dream Venues: Access to exclusive, unique, or high-demand venues that might not accommodate larger parties.
    3. Reduced Stress & Complexity: Fewer guests mean simpler logistics, less seating chart anxiety, and a more relaxed planning process. This allows the couple to truly enjoy their engagement and the day itself.

    4. Flexibility & Creative Freedom: Intimate weddings offer unparalleled flexibility in terms of venue choice (from cozy private dining rooms to art galleries, historic homes, or stunning outdoor locales) and timeline. You’re less bound by traditional reception schedules and can craft a day that flows perfectly for you.

    5. Authenticity: Stripping away the pressure of performance, couples can focus entirely on their love and commitment, resulting in a more heartfelt and authentic celebration.

Ontario: The Perfect Canvas for Intimate Celebrations

Ontario, with its incredibly diverse landscapes and thriving hospitality sector, is perfectly positioned to cater to this rising demand for intimate weddings and elevated elopements.

    • Toronto’s Boutique Hotels & Urban Gems: Downtown Toronto offers a plethora of chic boutique hotels with stunning event spaces perfect for micro-weddings. Think Hotel X Toronto, The Broadview Hotel, or unique restaurants with private rooms that offer sophisticated urban backdrops. Historic venues like Casa Loma or the Distillery District also have smaller spaces that feel incredibly grand for an intimate gathering.

The Marry Men Officiants: Crafting the Heart of Your Intimate Day

In an intimate wedding or elevated elopement, the ceremony itself becomes even more pronounced. With fewer distractions, the focus squarely lands on the exchange of vows and the declaration of your love. This is where the role of your officiant is absolutely critical.

At The Marry Men, Reverend Jason and Reverend Michael specialize in crafting ceremonies that are:

    • Deeply Personal: We take the time to understand your unique story, your values, and your vision for your day, regardless of guest count.
    • Engaging & Heartfelt: Our ceremonies are designed to captivate even the smallest audience, ensuring every word resonates and every moment feels genuine and significant.
    • Seamlessly Integrated: We work closely with your chosen venue and any other vendors to ensure the ceremony flows perfectly within your intimate timeline.
    • Legally Precise: Even for the most private elopement, we handle all the legal details with meticulous care, ensuring your union is recognized by the province of Ontario.

We ensure that the core of your celebration – your commitment to each other – shines through with profound meaning, making your intimate ceremony feel grand in its emotion and authenticity.

Is an Intimate Wedding or Elevated Elopement Right for You?

If you resonate with the idea of:

    • Being fully present on your wedding day.
    • Having meaningful conversations with every guest.
    • Investing in truly elevated experiences.
    • Crafting a celebration that feels uniquely and authentically yours.
    • Prioritizing connection over convention.

Then, embracing an intimate wedding or elevated elopement might be the perfect path for your Ontario celebration in 2025 or 2026. It’s an opportunity to create a wedding day that is not just a memorable event, but a cherished, deeply personal reflection of your journey together.

More Than Just a Party: Unleashing Interactive Guest Experiences & Entertainment at Your Ontario Wedding

By The Marry Men Wedding Officiants

The modern wedding is evolving beyond simply being a beautiful event; it’s transforming into a deeply immersive and memorable experience for everyone involved. For 2025 and 2026, couples in Ontario are pushing past the traditional DJ or live band to embrace Interactive Guest Experiences & Entertainment. It’s about creating moments that truly engage guests, spark conversation, and provide lasting memories, turning observers into active participants in your joyous celebration.

At The Marry Men Wedding Officiants, we believe your wedding day should be a dynamic reflection of your journey – a celebration that feels alive and engaging. We’ve seen firsthand how thoughtful entertainment can elevate the entire atmosphere, creating an undeniable buzz and leaving guests raving long after the last dance.

Beyond the Dance Floor: The Rise of Interactive Engagement

While great music will always be central to a fantastic reception, couples are now layering in unique activities that cater to diverse interests and energy levels. This trend acknowledges that not everyone is a dancer, and that shared experiences deepen the celebration. It’s about cultivating an atmosphere of fun, surprise, and connection.

Why the Shift to Experiential Entertainment?
    1. Memorable Moments: Generic entertainment fades, but a unique, interactive experience sticks with guests. They become part of the story.
    2. Bridging Generations & Personalities: Interactive elements can engage guests of all ages and types, from the quiet observer to the life of the party, ensuring everyone feels included.
    3. Encouraging Interaction: These activities naturally foster conversation and connection among guests, especially those who might not know each other well.
    4. Personalization: Many interactive options can be tailored to the couple’s story, hobbies, or inside jokes, adding another layer of personal touch.

      5. Social Media Shareability: Unique experiences are inherently more shareable, providing organic, authentic content that extends the life of your wedding beyond the day itself.

      6. Value Beyond the Cost: Couples see the investment in unique entertainment as adding significant value to the guest experience, making the celebration truly special.

Bringing the Wow Factor: Popular Interactive Experiences in Ontario Weddings

Ontario’s vibrant event industry is teeming with talent ready to bring your interactive visions to life. Here are some of the most sought-after ideas:

    1. Live Wedding Illustrators / Painters:

The Complete Guide to Obtaining Your Marriage License in Ontario by The Marry Men Wedding Officiants: What to Do, Where to Go, How to Apply, and How to Pick Up:

Congratulations, lovebirds! You’re on the exciting path to tying the knot in beautiful Ontario. One of the most crucial steps, and often the most overlooked until the last minute, is securing your marriage license. At The Marry Men Wedding Officiants, we believe in making this process as smooth and stress-free as possible. This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about obtaining your Ontario marriage license, ensuring you’re fully prepared for your big day.

Why You Need a Marriage License in Ontario

Simply put, a marriage license is the legal document that authorizes your marriage ceremony to take place in Ontario. Without it, your union cannot be legally recognized. Think of it as your official permission slip to say “I do!” Your wedding officiant will require this document on your wedding day to legally perform your ceremony and subsequently register your marriage with the province.

What to Do: The Application Process

Getting your marriage license in Ontario is a relatively straightforward process, but it requires attention to detail. Here’s a breakdown of the steps:

    1. Download and Complete the Application Form: The first step is to obtain the Marriage Licence Application Form. You can usually find this form on your local city or town hall’s website (e.g., City of Mississauga, City of Toronto, etc.) or pick up a physical copy at their municipal office.
      • Accuracy is Key: Fill out the form completely and accurately. Double-check all names, dates of birth, and addresses. Any discrepancies could lead to delays.
      • Original Signatures: Both applicants must sign and date the form with original, ink signatures. Photocopies or scanned signatures are generally not accepted.
    2. Gather Your Identification Documents: Both you and your partner will need to provide two (2) pieces of original, valid government-issued identification.
      • Photo ID: At least one piece of identification for each of you must include a current photo and signature.
      • Matching Names: Ensure the names on both pieces of identification match perfectly. If you have middle names you wish to have on your marriage license, they must appear on both IDs.
      • Acceptable ID Examples:
        • Birth certificate (including any change of name certificates)
        • Valid driver’s license
        • Valid passport
        • Canadian Citizenship card
        • Record of immigrant landing
        • Valid Ontario photo health card (note: while it’s government-issued, some offices might prefer a second photo ID)
        • Valid Ontario Photo Card
        • Permanent Resident Card
        • Confirmation of Permanent Residency
        • Indian Status Card
        • Nexus Card
        • Firearms/Possession License
        • Canadian Armed Forces Identification
      • Translated Documents: If any of your identification documents are in a language other than English or French, you will need to provide a translation from a certified translator.
    3. Proof of Divorce (If Applicable): If either you or your partner has been previously married and divorced, you’ll need to provide specific documentation:
      • Divorced in Canada: You must provide the original or a court-certified copy of the final decree, final judgment, or certificate of divorce (photocopies are NOT accepted).
      • Divorced Outside Canada: This process is more involved. You will need to obtain authorization from the Office of the Registrar General before you can get a marriage license. This typically involves submitting:
        1. The original or court-certified copy of the divorce decree or annulment (translated into English or French, if necessary).
        2. A legal opinion letter from an Ontario lawyer, addressed to both applicants, confirming the divorce would be recognized under Ontario law.
        3. A completed Marriage Licence Application Form.
        4. This process can take several weeks, so factor this into your timeline! Contact the Office of the Registrar General at 1-800-461-2156 for specific details.
    4. Age Requirements:
          • You must be at least 16 years old to get married in Ontario.
          • If you are 16 or 17 years old, you will need written consent from both of your parents. Contact the municipal office where you plan to apply to get the consent form.
