Sand Blending
LIKE SANDS THROUGH AN HOURGLASS
In this ritual, the couple pours two separate vases of different-coloured sand into the same vessel, creating a layered, one-of-a-kind pattern. From that moment, it will be impossible to separate those grains of sand which have come to symbolize their union. Many couples personalize this ritual by using sand from meaningful locations, and it’s especially popular for beach ceremonies and destination weddings.
The officiant is usually in charge of facilitating the sand blending ritual.
The following items will be required to perform this during your ceremony:
- Sand. You may choose to use sand of two different colours to represent each partner. This will make your grains of sand easier to distinguish once they are poured into the large vessel and makes for a lovely visual effect. You can gather sand from a location that is important to your journey as a couple, or you can simply buy sand from a local craft store.
- Two small vessels. This can be made of any material, though many couples tend to use glass so that the sand is visible.
- One large vessel. Again, many couples prefer glass vessels so that the blending of sand is visible to wedding guests.
The sand blending ritual usually takes place after the exchange of rings. However, be sure to discuss this with your officiant to determine where the most appropriate moment would be for the sand blending to occur.

Sample excerpt from ceremony
“On this day, this union is signified through the pouring of these two containers of sand: one representing you [Partner 1] and all that you have been, all that you are, and all that you will be; and the other representing you, [Partner 2], and all that you have been, all that you are, and all that you will be. Once the two containers are poured, there will no longer be individual containers. Rather, they will be joined as one. Just as these grains of sand can never be separated into individual containers again, so shall your union be everlasting.”
