How to Get a Marriage License in Toronto: A Step-by-Step Guide

Planning your wedding in Toronto? One of the essential steps to legally tying the knot is obtaining a marriage license. Here’s a step-by-step guide from The Marry Men Wedding Officiants to help you navigate the process smoothly.

Step 1: Ensure You Meet the Eligibility Requirements

Before applying for a marriage license, make sure you meet the following criteria:

• Both applicants must be at least 18 years old.
• You must not currently be married to another person.

Step 2: Gather Required Documents

You will need to bring the following documents to your appointment:

• Valid government-issued photo identification for both applicants (e.g., passport, driver’s license, Ontario photo card).
• If either applicant has been divorced, the original or court-certified copy of the final decree absolute or certificate of divorce is required. Divorces outside of Canada require additional documentation.

Step 3: Complete the Marriage License Application Form

Download and complete the marriage license application form. Both applicants must fill out and sign the form, which includes personal details such as names, dates of birth, and marital status.

Step 4: Book an Appointment

You must book an appointment to submit your application in person. You can do this online through the City of Toronto’s website. Appointments are available Monday to Friday, excluding holidays.

On the day of your appointment, both applicants do not need to be present, and one partner can attend the appointment, though we highly recommend attending together as it is a lovely and memorable moment in your wedding day planning process. Bring your completed application form and all required documents. As of July 2024 The fee for a marriage license in Toronto is $160.00 (not including hst) payable by cash, debit, or credit card.
